Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) exists to care for the people of our region, and that remains our focus. Every day, our teams deliver skilled, compassionate care to our community – often under significant pressure. We are proud of their commitment and the quality of care they provide. We are aware that a group of senior medical staff last night proposed a motion of no confidence in the Board Chair and CEO. This motion has no legal standing or governance authority within AWH, and risks distracting from the work that really matters - supporting our people and delivering the best possible care for our community. We have sought to engage directly with the Australian Medical Association, having called and written in the past week without response. We remain open and willing to meet at any time, but progress comes through conversation and collaboration – not through motions or public campaigns that undermine confidence in our health service. Albury Wodonga Health has long-held, well-governed systems (listed below) that enable staff to raise feedback and concerns safely and constructively, fostering open communication, accountability, and continuous improvement across the organisation. We know AWH faces cultural challenges. We are listening to staff and acting, with Safer Care Victoria leading an independent Quality and Safety Review into surgical services and the emergency departments. This review will identify opportunities to strengthen workplace culture and ensure our teams are safe and supported to deliver high-quality care. We want to thank our board and leaders across the organisation, who courageously speak up for staff safety and who generously give of their time, knowledge, and expertise to AWH. We also thank our dedicated staff across all 22 sites, who continue deliver exceptional care for the people of Albury-Wodonga and beyond. Our community needs us focused on patients, not politics. The best way forward is by working together and continuing to strengthen the care and culture of Albury Wodonga Health. Mechanisms available for staff provided as background: 1. Senior Medical Staff Council: Co-chaired by Chief Medical Officer Dr John Elcock and VMO representative Mr Jonathan Lewin (Urological Surgeon), this forum provides a direct link between senior clinicians, the Executive and the Board to discuss issues and improvements.
