The Maternity Antenatal Postnatal Service (MAPS) is a program is that enables women to be cared for by the same midwives throughout pregnancy and up to 10 days postnatally. The MAPS program aims to provide families with continuity of care and encourages the development of individualised care aimed at improving outcomes for mothers and babies.

The key quality for clients of the program is the relationship developed with the Midwives, this facilitates trust and rapport and provides confidence with the midwives who care for them during the antenatal and postnatal period.

For most women your allocated MAPS midwife will be able to provide the majority of the antenatal and postnatal care that you require. If the need for medical consultation or referral arises, the MAPS midwife is supported by the Obstetric Provider (Doctor that specialised in pregnancy and birthing care) and other medical and allied health staff as required.

Our Philosophy

We are a team midwives whose passion is to provide you with a supportive & respectful relationship as we guide you through your pregnancy and early parenting journey.

Who can access the MAPS Program?

The MAPS program is a midwife led program for women having one baby with a healthy uncomplicated pregnancy. When complications are identified the woman may be referred to a obstetric medical practitioner aligned with AWH.

All women who meet criteria at the initial antenatal booking will be offered MAPS and care continued in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team if needed during pregnancy.

If mother and baby are well, early postnatal discharge from the birthing environment at 4 to 6 hours post birth will be offered and encouraged for all women. Noting women having a caesarean section will require a longer stay in hospital.

Women access Maternity Services by Obstetric Medical Provider referral or self-referral from 13 weeks.

Women will be screened based on the MAPS criteria in in keeping with low to medium risk.

After being referred women contact the Antenatal Reception Booking line, based in the Maternity Unit at AWH Wodonga Hospital where they will be offered a booking-in visit ideally at 13-14 weeks gestation with a midwife who becomes her MAPS Midwife.

Women requesting or who are suitable for the MAPs program can self-refer or be linked in through their Booking In appointment. Screening will take place at the Booking-In visit or first appointment.

This visit will ideally be attended by the MAPS Midwife although some women may be already booked in and will then only require allocation to an allocated MAPS Midwife.

The booking process will be the same as for all current booking in processes, policies and procedures for AWH.

Once discharged from hospital, your MAPS midwife will arrange your ongoing care through a combination of home visits and phone calls for up to 10 days. The number of visits you receive is based on individual requirements.

Early discharge supports you going home within 18 hours of birth. Should you birth by caesarean section you are able to stay in the maternity ward for up to 2 nights.

Your midwife will discuss with you the benefits of going home early. In most situations you can consider going home within 4-6 hours (time of day permitting) of the birth and your midwife will arrange to visit you in your home. Alternatively, transfer to the postnatal ward will be arranged from about 2-3 hours after the birth and the hospital postnatal midwifery staff will care for you there.

We will provide:

  • Antenatal Care with a known midwife for the duration of your pregnancy
  • Antenatal and postnatal care at no cost
  • We will collaborate with other health care professionals as needed

Following the birth of your baby we will provide support in your home for up to 10 days
