New Antenatal Clinic Opens at Wodonga Hospital, Bringing Coordinated Pregnancy Care Closer to Home

Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) will officially open its new Antenatal Clinic at Wodonga Hospital today, marking a significant step forward for maternity care in the region. The clinic brings routine antenatal care, the high-risk pregnancy clinic, specialist consultations and multidisciplinary support together under one roof for the first time, giving local families access to the same standard of coordinated care available in metropolitan maternity services.
“This clinic is designed around the needs of women and families, bringing together the care, expertise and support they need throughout their pregnancy journey in one convenient location,” said Julie Wright, Director of Nursing, Women’s & Children's, Albury Wodonga Health.
“A key feature of the model is continuity of care. Women will build a relationship with the same care team throughout their pregnancy, giving them the opportunity to see familiar faces, have consistent support and feel more confident and connected throughout their care.”
The initiative supports equitable access to high-quality maternity care in regional communities under the Victorian Government’s Maternity and Newborn Health Plan.
By bringing routine antenatal care, specialist obstetric services and multidisciplinary support together in one location, the clinic will make it easier for women with complex pregnancies to access the care they need closer to home. This integrated model supports earlier detection of complications such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes, closer collaboration between obstetricians, midwives and allied health teams, and fewer unnecessary emergency presentations.
Dr Simone Mulder, Clinical Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Albury Wodonga Health said, “For the first time in our region, all women can now receive pregnancy care under the public health system. We hope to serve over 1,000 women a year through this clinic, expanding on the fantastic work of the MAPS (Maternity Antenatal Postnatal Service) program and the already existing high risk pregnancy clinic to offer care through all pregnancies and postnatal care.”
The clinic will provide:

Routine antenatal assessments (blood pressure, weight, fetal growth, urine screening)

Ultrasound services

Midwifery-led continuity of care

Obstetric consultations for high-risk pregnancies

Multidisciplinary support, including diabetes educators, social workers and perinatal mental health specialists

Aligned education programs covering birth preparation, parenting and breastfeeding

Triage services for pregnancy-related concerns

Telehealth services
The clinic will also make care more accessible for women from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
The clinic is staffed by a midwifery-led team supported by registrars and consultant obstetricians, providing safe, efficient care with clear referral pathways to the high-risk clinic when needed. The model also supports the training of junior medical staff and closer collaboration between disciplines, strengthening the region's maternity workforce for the long term.
The opening event was attended by Dr. Helen Haines, Federal Member for Indi and Chief Midwife of Victoria, Elisa McDonald.
The antenatal clinic is located at the Wodonga Hospital site, adjacent to the Maternity Ward, with entrance off Wilson Street. The clinic operates Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, and women can choose their preferred day to attend.
