At Albury Wodonga Health (AWH), advancing the health and wellbeing of our community is at the heart of everything we do. We recognise that risk is an inherent part of healthcare, and managing it effectively is crucial to driving continuous improvement and efficiency. This approach ensures that we can deliver safe patient care while advancing our strategic objectives. AWH acknowledges that some risk is necessary to drive improvement and enhance the effectiveness of our operations and internal systems. To provide high-quality healthcare for our community, AWH is prepared to take calculated risks in pursuit of our strategic and business objectives. Our Risk Appetite Statement helps us assess our risk capacity and profile, ensuring we make informed decisions and take corrective action when necessary.

Simply Risk Appetite is the amount of risk, on a broad level, that AWH is willing to accept in pursuit to achieve our objectives. It helps us take the risks necessary, with confidence, to fulfil our strategy – Transforming for Our Future – Strategic Plan 2024 – 2028

Our Risk Management Policy and Framework, including this Risk Appetite Statement, guides our decision-making, balancing uncertainty with the pursuit of improvement opportunities. This framework helps create a consistent, transparent approach across AWH and supports an organisational risk culture that communicates where risks should be mitigated and where we’re prepared to accept them.

Across early 2025, the Board of Directors have reviewed and revised the AWH Risk Appetite Statement. The 2025 Risk Appetite Statement replaces the existing 2019 statement.

The 2025 statement has many differences from the 2019 statement. The main difference is that it has measurable key performance indicators for each risk category, which are then integrated and measured through the Risk Register.
