Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) is proud to announce the launch of the Green Team Return & Earn Program, a sustainability initiative designed to reduce waste and promote environmental stewardship at Albury Hospital. This innovative program, part of the NSW Return & Earn scheme, encourages the recycling of eligible containers such as bottles and cans, while fostering inclusivity by actively involving volunteers with disabilities.

The Green Team Eco Volunteers play a pivotal role in the program. They collect recyclable containers from designated 65-litre bins located across Albury Hospital, including the main entrance, café areas, and waiting rooms, transferring them to larger 240-litre wheelie bins for collection. The program not only supports AWH’s waste reduction goals but also provides meaningful volunteer opportunities that promote independence and community contribution.

A key focus of the program is disability inclusion, ensuring that volunteer roles are accessible and flexible. Annette, a Green Team Eco-Volunteer, shared her enthusiasm: “I like that I can work independently and at a time that suits me. It’s excellent knowing that the money earned will go back into the Green Team’s sustainability initiatives.”

“The Green Team Return & Earn Program reflects our commitment to sustainability and inclusivity,” said Green Team Leader Alice Fitzpatrick. “By empowering volunteers, including those with disabilities, we’re creating a cleaner, greener hospital environment while fostering a sense of purpose and belonging.”

Sarah Bartsh, Volunteer Coordinator, is excited to see this program grow. “We get a lot of enquiries from NDIS agencies looking for capacity building volunteer activities for their clients. This is a role that can be done independently, with a carer, or in small groups. It does have a few physical demands though - during orientation, the volunteers and I tracked about 3000 steps each!”

The program is expected to reduce landfill waste, generate financial returns through the Return & Earn scheme for reinvestment in sustainability initiatives, and set a benchmark for community-driven environmental action.
