Sip Til Send: Improving Pre-Operative Care at AWH
Friday, 19 December 2025 / Albury Wodonga Health
From 15 December 2025, AWH will implement Sip Til Send, a new initiative designed to improve patient comfort and safety during pre-operative fasting.
What’s changing?
Patients scheduled for theatre will now be permitted to sip approved clear fluids, within strict volume guidelines, until they are called for surgery. Adults may sip up to 200 mL per hour, and children up to 3 mL/kg per hour, following ANZCA-approved guidelines.
Why this matters for our patients, and for us:
Prolonged fasting can lead to dehydration, anxiety, and increased surgical stress. For adults, this often means harder IV access and metabolic imbalances. For children, extended fasting can cause distress and low blood sugar. By allowing clear fluids until theatre, we can:
- Maintain hydration and comfort
- Improve cannulation and recovery outcomes
- Reduce post-operative nausea and vomiting
What you need to do
Please review the updated clinical guidelines on PROMPT for full details, including exclusions and approved fluids. Your role in applying and communicating this change is essential to its success.
