“Heart Matters” is a grass-roots community education research project that aims to increase awareness and community member confidence in recognising and responding to the warning signs of a heart attack and reducing the risks of coronary heart disease.

Heart Matters is a joint initiative between Monash University, Heart Foundation, Ambulance Victoria and Victorian State Government.

The project is being rolled out across Victoria in regions that have been identified as high risk for coronary artery disease.

This research will help us to know targeted community education is an effective way to:

  • increase community member knowledge of heart attack warning signs

  • increase community member intention to use an ambulance

  • increase the early use of ambulance in response to warning signs of a heart attack

  • decrease the number of out of hospital cardiac arrest (related to heart attack)

  • increase community member knowledge of the risks of coronary heart disease

  • increase the number of community members having Heart Health Checks
