Scabies is a parasitic infestation caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin and lay eggs, causing intense itching and a rash.

Healthcare workers must maintain alert for scabies when in high-density settings like residential aged care facilities (RACFs) and hospitals, vigilance and rapid containment are critical to avoiding widespread transmission.

Public health advice

  • Maintain clinical vigilance and early detection – Screen new admissions, identify typical presentations and confirm diagnosis by medical evaluation.

  • Implement containment protocols – arrange contact precautions for any suspected or confirmed cases, exclude symptomatic staff until one day after they complete their appropriate treatment.

  • Coordinate appropriate treatment for residents and patients.

  • Arrange environmental decontamination – ensure environmental cleaning occurs as per guidelines, launder contaminated fabrics and ensure contact tracing occurs to patients/residents' families.
