  • Additional confirmed measles cases have been reported in Victoria and Sydney (NSW) over the past fortnight.

  • Ongoing risk reflects both recent travel to measles-endemic countries and local transmission following contact with confirmed cases, including attendance at shared exposure sites.

  • In Victoria, a notable proportion of cases this year have unknowingly attended healthcare settings while infectious, including emergency departments, primary care, and urgent care services when seeking care, highlighting sustained transmission risk in these environments.

Public health advice

  • Maintain a high degree of suspicion for measles in any patient with compatible symptoms particularly those with recent travel to an affected country or have visited listed exposure site/s in VIC or NSW.

  • Isolate suspected cases and call the Ovens Murray Public Health Unit (OM PHU) urgently on 1300 651 160 (available 24/7).

  • Ensure all patients are up to date with measles immunisation and proactively recommend MMR vaccination for travellers to affected regions prior to departure.
