On Wednesday 10 September, Albury Wodonga Health staff joined locals for Lifeline Albury Wodonga’s Out of the Shadows Walk to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.

For the AWH Mental Health Team and CEO Bill Appleby, along with over 40 community members who took part, the walk was a chance to honour those lost to suicide, support those left behind, and shine a light on the importance of connection in people’s darkest hours.

The walk began at 6am at the Kremur Street boat ramp in Albury, following the Wagirra walking trail to Hovell Tree Park. As dawn broke, participants paused to watch the sunrise and take part in a short memorial service – a moment of reflection, remembrance, and hope.

“The symbolism is powerful,” said Dannielle McLeish, AWH Area Director, Mental Health, Wellbeing & AOD.

“When we start it’s still dark, then the dawn breaks, and that signifies walking out of darkness into the light of hope and connection.”

“The Out of the Shadows Walk is part of a nationwide initiative during World Suicide Prevention Week. Thousands of people across Australia take part in similar walks to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and raise funds for vital crisis intervention and suicide prevention services,” she said.

To date, the AWH team has fundraised $1,868, all of which will directly support the work of Lifeline Albury Wodonga.

The statistics highlight the urgency: nine Australians die every day by suicide. Suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15–44.

AWH CEO Bill Appleby said the walk was not only about remembering lives lost but also about creating awareness in the community, opening conversations and reducing stigma.

“Albury Wodonga Health is proud to stand alongside our community to raise awareness, remember those lost to suicide, and support those who continue to be impacted. By coming together, we can learn from each other, support one another, and remind people that help is always available.”
