The Albury Wodonga Health Foundation is proud to announce that the Wodonga Squash and Racquetball Club are stepping up once again to raise vital funds in support of mental health care in our region.

This year, funds raised through the 24-Hour Squash and Racquetball Rally Marathon will directly benefit Nolan House - Albury Wodonga Health’s acute adult mental health inpatient unit - and its Therapeutic Group Program.

The exciting, annual community event aims to raise $25,000 to provide essential recovery-focused support for adults experiencing acute mental illness by rallying on the squash courts, in teams, for a full 24-hours.

The Therapeutic Program consists of scheduled activities such as Cooking Group, Art Therapy, and Exercise. The activities are designed to assist consumers in developing skills that support their recovery journey. All activities are underpinned by evidence-based practice and encourage creative expression, promoting independence and resilience in consumers.

Nolan House Occupational Therapist, Lauren Bittner, said the program offers far more than structured activities.

‘Importantly, these programs offer the opportunity for consumers to make social connections with others, something that can play a significant part in their ongoing recovery. Seeing their participation grow and connections form is a positive sign that a consumer is making progress on their recovery journey.’

The Therapeutic Group Program activities are very popular at Nolan House, with consumers and staff alike engaging enthusiastically in many of the activities. Additional funding would enable the continuation and enrichment of these programs, ensuring consumers have access to meaningful engagement and life skills development.

Essential equipment and needs already identified by the Nolan House Team include headphones for sensory modulation, sensory items, a new microwave for group cooking, and seedlings, gardening equipment, and soil for Nolan House’s veggie garden bed.

Helen Woolley, Wodonga Squash and Racquetball Club Treasurer, said the event is about more than sport.

‘It's about rallying together as a community to support our local healthcare providers and to give Nolan House the resources they need to continue delivering exceptional, person-centered care,’ she said.

‘I’m sure that working together as a community, we can raise some much-needed funds and have a lot of fun doing it,’ she added.

The Wodonga Squash and Racquetball Association hosts this fantastic event each year, and this marathon will no doubt deliver a fun filled, high energy tournament of non-stop squash and racquetball for a full 24 hours. Up to 15 individuals can make up a full team with all abilities and skill levels welcome, including first-timers.

Registration is open to adults for $50 and juniors for $30. All proceeds will directly benefit Albury Wodonga Health’s Nolan House and its programs.
