Patients across the Border region will benefit from enhanced ear, nose and throat (ENT) care, thanks to a generous $88,000 contribution from the Commercial Club Albury.

The donation has enabled Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) to invest in a state-of-the-art Medtronic ENT POWER system, including an M5 microdebrider – a specialised surgical tool used in delicate nose and throat procedures.

The technology supports greater precision in surgery, particularly in delicate areas such as the nasal passages, vocal cords and airways.

In the past 10 months, AWH has performed approximately 842 ENT procedures, up from 765 the previous year, with nose cases alone doubling to 152. The increase reflects a growing demand for ENT services and underscores the need for reliable, contemporary surgical equipment.

Chief Operating Officer Linda Hudec said the donation would have a direct and meaningful impact on patient care.

“For our patients, this isn’t just about equipment — it’s about reassurance,” Ms Hudec said.

“Reassurance that, during what can be an incredibly uncertain time, their care team has what they need to deliver safe, high-quality care.”

ENT surgeon Dr Eliza Tweddle said the new system enhances both the safety and effectiveness of procedures.

“This technology allows the removal of nasal polyps and turbinate surgery improving our patients’ quality of life,” said Dr Tweddle.

“Inability to breathe has significant flow on effects, and surgery with this equipment improves the patient’s airway. It can also be used to remove lesions on the vocal cords both benign and malignant.”

ENT conditions can significantly impact everyday life, affecting breathing, hearing and speech, and in some cases may be linked to more serious diagnoses.

Having access to advanced equipment locally, backed by the skill of the AWH surgical workforce, ensures patients can receive timely care while staying close to their families and support networks.

Commercial Club Albury President Graeme Edgar said the organisation was proud to support healthcare services in the region.

“We’re committed to giving back to the community and supporting initiatives that make a real difference,” Mr Edgar said.

“We’re pleased to see this contribution helping local clinicians deliver important care to patients across the region.”

Ms Hudec said partnerships like this play a vital role in strengthening regional healthcare.

“The support of organisations like the Commercial Club Albury helps ensure we can continue to provide reliable, high-quality care when it’s needed most,” she said.
