Chair of the Albury Wodonga Health Board, Jonathan Green, today announced that Chief Executive Officer Bill Appleby has resigned and will hand over to Professor Andrew Way as Interim Chief Executive Officer on Wednesday 25 March.

Mr Appleby joined AWH in 2022 and has led the organisation through a period of operational and organisational change. He has focused AWH on strengthening clinical governance, safer systems and patient-centred care. Mr Green thanks Mr Appleby for his significant contribution to the health service.

“Bill has led AWH through a period of sustained pressure across the health system, with a clear focus on strengthening the organisation and supporting its people. That included initiatives like the Annual Staff and Volunteer Recognition of Excellence Awards, which recognise the contribution of our people.”

“The Board acknowledges Bill’s contribution and thanks him for his leadership and commitment to the service and the community.” Mr Appleby said it had been a privilege to lead AWH.

“I would like to thank our staff and volunteers who turn up each day to do their very best, to deliver high quality, safe, compassionate care to our patients and their families,” Mr Appleby said.

“I would also like to thank the AWH Board and Executive Team for their steadfast leadership in implementing much needed transformation across this critically important health service.”

Professor Way will commence as Interim Chief Executive Officer on Wednesday 25 March, providing continuity of leadership and supporting the ongoing delivery of AWH’s priorities. As Interim CEO, Professor Way brings experience in leading complex health services, including 15 years as Chief Executive of Alfred Health. His professional focus aligns strongly with AWH’s priorities, particularly in:

  • Quality and safety in patient care
  • Strengthening clinical and academic health partnerships
  • Improving patient flow and experience
  • Leveraging digital and IT systems as enablers of better clinical care

He looks forward to meeting the team on Wednesday and working with them to implement all findings of Safer Care Victoria’s independent review of Albury Wodonga Health led by Chief Quality and Safety Officer, Louise McKinlay.
