Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) has transitioned the inpatient unit and day oncology services at the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre (AWRCC) to a publicly operated service, marking a defining moment for cancer care in the region.

The transition, effective from midnight Friday 23 January 2026, strengthens access to safe, high-quality, equitable cancer care for communities across the Albury-Wodonga catchment, while ensuring continuity of services for currents patients and families.

AWH Chief Executive Officer Bill Appleby said the move to a public model would deliver immediate and long-term benefits for patients, staff and the broader health system.

“This transition is about making cancer care more accessible, more connected and more sustainable for the future,” Mr Appleby said.

“From today, patients can access consultants and other public diagnostic procedures at no charge under the public system, have greater access to Allied Health services, and benefit from a simpler to navigate system.”

The full range of cancer services will continue at the centre, including inpatient beds, day chemotherapy, radiotherapy, haematology, pharmacy services and the Wellness Centre. Partnerships with Dorevitch and Genesis Care will remain in place, and Ramsay Health Care Pharmacy will continue to operate onsite.

“Continuity of care has been at the heart of every decision,” he said.  “Moving to a publicly operated model removes cost barriers for patients, clarifies accountabilities, strengthens integration across health services, and creates a strong foundation for future investment in cancer care.”

Planning is underway for an expanded public cancer outpatient service, scheduled to open in September 2026.

Albury Wodonga Health acknowledged the longstanding contribution of Ramsay Health Care to the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre and will continue working closely with partners to ensure a smooth and coordinated transition.

“This is a significant step forward for regional cancer care,” Mr Appleby said. “Together with our staff, clinicians and partners, we are building a future where every patient can receive high quality cancer care closer to home, with confidence, compassion and dignity.”
