Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) is marking a major milestone in the transformation of cancer care across the Border region, with the launch of its first fully public Cancer Specialist Outpatient Clinics commencing, yesterday, Thursday 18 December.

The new service, led by Dr Brett Hamilton, Clinical Director of Cancer Services, will operate from Level One of the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre, and supports growing demand and ensure equity of access to safe, high-quality, and timely oncology and haematology care for people across our region.

This development forms a key part of AWH’s broader, multi-stage cancer services transition, which includes the establishment of a dedicated and expanded public outpatient cancer service scheduled to open in September 2026.

“We are pleased to take this next step in strengthening cancer care for our region,” said Dr. John Elcock, Chief Medical Officer, AWH. “Launching our first fully public Cancer Specialist Outpatient Clinics represents a significant moment for our community. It ensures continuity of care today, while building the foundations of an accessible and sustainable public cancer service for the future.”

AWH Chief Executive Officer Bill Appleby said the historic opening of the clinic reflects a significant step forward for public cancer services in our region.

“This is about strengthening access to public cancer care and doing so in a way that is sustainable, clinically led and focused on the needs of our community,” Mr Appleby said. “Yesterday’s successful launch is an important milestone, and it demonstrates our role as a regional health service committed to strengthening public access to cancer care for the Border community.”

Patients and referrers can continue to use existing phone number which remain unchanged. The Clinic phone number is (02) 6064 1650.

AWH acknowledges the vital role clinicians and staff play in delivering exceptional cancer care and thanks them for their ongoing commitment to supporting patients throughout this transition.
