Diversity Through Peer Learning

Caitlin and Murray stepped up to lead a team of nurses for ED training

Albury Emergency Department Peer-to-Peer Learning Program

Caitlin Smith - ED Registered Nurse, kindly shared her insights after leading some of the training programs

How did you get involved with a train-the-trainer program?

I was approached by the education team and asked if I would like to step into the train-the-trainer role.

What made you consider stepping up to train your peers?

It is a great opportunity to develop new leadership skills as a junior nurse whilst also mixing things up and trying something new.

Now that the training has taken place, what are your key takeaways from your leadership role here? For example; pride, confidence, keen to take up these sorts of opportunities again?

I have definitely gained more confidence which will in the future make me more likely to step into similar roles. It is also an amazing opportunity to become familiar with our new department which will be a very exciting time when we go live!

Do you think peer-to-peer learning is beneficial in the workplace, if so how? For example, knowledge transfer from people who do the role etc.

Yes definitely, I think a lot of what I have learnt as a registered nurse has been from my colleagues and watching their practice. The train-the-trainer program has allowed me to increase my knowledge of the new department and then transfer that knowledge to my peers. I believe learning from each other is far more beneficial than going through online modules/power point presentations.
