Albury Wodonga Health Welcomes New Board Appointment and Announces Reappointments

Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Director and the reappointment of two highly experienced Board members, effective 1 July 2025. These appointments reflect AWH’s ongoing commitment to strong governance, strategic continuity, and the delivery of high-quality healthcare for the Albury Wodonga region.
The Ministerial appointments, made on behalf of the Victorian State Government, take effect from 1 July 2025, with Mr Chris Mirams joining the Board and Ms Angela Verde and Dr James Mackie reappointed to continue their valued contributions under the leadership of Chair Jonathan Green.
Mr Jonathan Green, Chair of the AWH Board, welcomed the appointments, stating, "Strong leadership and strategic oversight are critical as we navigate a period of significant growth and transformation. We are pleased to welcome Chris Mirams to the Board and to retain the considerable expertise of Angela Verde and Dr James Mackie.”
“Each of these leaders bring a unique perspective and a shared commitment to improving public health outcomes for our community, and we welcome their perspectives and skills as we deliver on our substantial change agenda’’, he added.
Joining the Albury Wodonga Health Board on a three-year term is:
Chris Mirams, who brings significant experience as a Board Chair and agricultural industry leader. A Fellow of the Australian Rural Leadership Program and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD), Chris has held numerous executive and non-executive roles including with Sheep Producers Australia, Meat and Livestock Australia, and North East Water. He is recognised for his strategic leadership, deep community engagement and ability to drive organisational transformation in complex environments.
"I am honoured to join the AWH Board at such a pivotal time," Mr Mirams said. "Regional communities deserve access to high-quality healthcare, closer to home, and I look forward to contributing to an organisation so deeply committed to making that a reality."
In addition to this new appointment, Albury Wodonga Health is pleased to confirm the reappointment of two respected Directors whose continued leadership will provide valuable continuity and expertise.
Angela Verde, Deputy Chair of the AWH Board, has been reappointed for a third term to 30 June 2028. Angela has been a Director since 2019 and brings extensive experience across state government, clinical services, research and not-for-profit governance. She is also a Non-Executive Director on the Northeast Water Board and a member of the RANZCOG Appeals Committee. Angela chairs the Board’s People, Safety and Governance Subcommittee and is a member of the Executive Remuneration Subcommittee.

Dr James Mackie has been reappointed for a second term to 30 June 2028. Dr Mackie is Chair of the Board’s Patient Safety, Quality and Service Review Subcommittee and currently serves as the Medical Director of Patient Safety at the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission. With more than 30 years’ experience as a renal physician and senior healthcare executive, Dr Mackie brings a deep commitment to data-driven quality improvement and safer patient care.
"The Board plays a crucial role in supporting and guiding clinical excellence. I am pleased to continue this important work with AWH and contribute to our shared vision for safer, accessible, timely, high-quality care," said Dr Mackie.
Bill Appleby, Chief Executive Officer of Albury Wodonga Health, also welcomed the appointments, saying, “These Board appointments come at a pivotal time for AWH as we advance key projects and initiatives to enhance healthcare services for our community. The combination of renewed leadership from Angela Verde and Dr James Mackie, alongside the fresh perspective brought by Chris Mirams, ensures our governance remains strong and future focused.”

While AWH welcomes a new Board member and celebrates the reappointment of two dedicated Directors, it also bids farewell and extends its gratitude Mr Ashley Boyd as he concludes his term on 30 June 2025.
Mr Ashley Boyd has made a significant contribution to the Board since his appointment in July 2023 as a valued member of both the Board’s Finance, Audit, Infrastructure and Risk Subcommittee and the Community Engagement Subcommittee.
Chair Jonathan Green thanked Mr Boyd for his service, "Ashley has made a meaningful contribution during his time on the Board. His insights and dedication to community engagement and financial oversight have been greatly appreciated. We wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.”
