Located on the border of Victoria and NSW, Albury Wodonga Health is the largest regional health service between Sydney and Melbourne, and the second largest regional health service in Victoria.

 

Albury Wodonga Health provides services to the region which include Internal Medicine, Cardiology (with cardiac catheterisation), Medical Oncology, General Surgery, Vascular, Urology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Intensive Care and Emergency. Cancer services are provided within the regional cancer centre located on our Albury Campus, supporting patients and families from diagnosis to treatment with both Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and wellbeing services. 

In addition, we have community-based mental health services and an extensive range of community and primary health services. AWH Mental Health service reaches beyond the cross-border region and covers an area spanning 50,000 square kilometres from Southern New South Wales to North East Victoria with 10 specialty community based mental health services, plus three acute care services, and three recovery and rehabilitation facilities.

In January 2021, AWH established a local Public Health Unit was responsible for the public health response to COVID-19 for the Local Government Areas of Alpine, Indigo, Towong, Wangaratta and Wodonga. The Public Health unit continues to provide an independent operational function for any public health responses.

Albury Emergency Department has undergone a $36m redevelopment to offer upgraded services to the region. The new Albury ED opened in April 2024.

AWH offers dedicated PGY3/3+ positions for doctors interested in pursuing a career in Critical Care. These roles are specifically designed to provide a strong clinical foundation to support progression into speciality training programs.


Doctors appointed to the Critical Care HMO positions undertake structured rotations across Anaesthetics, Intensive Care, and Emergency Medicine, allowing for broad exposure and the development of essential skills across the critical care continuum.


The Critical Care SRMO positions are appointed directly by AWH and are not part of the PMCV match process.

Our Hospital Medical Officers (HMOs) are well supported by experienced Consultants and Registrars, who are approachable, readily accessible, and committed to teaching. This strong culture of supervision and mentorship provides excellent learning opportunities and hands-on clinical experience. 

Combined with a comprehensive medical education training program, AWH offers an outstanding environment for pre-vocational medical training.

Basic Physician Training (BPT) - PGY2 and above

 

For the 2027 clinical year, Albury Wodonga Health will continue to offer Basic Physician Training (BPT) pathway, supporting pre-vocational doctors in their first step towards a career in physician training.


Training at AWH provides access to high-quality clinical experiences and educational opportunities across the accredited training sites. AWH is part of the Greater Western Consortium.


This pathway is a structured 3-year BPT program, designed collaboratively between AWH and the Greater Western Consortium to ensure trainees receive comprehensive exposure to accredited training environments. 


It also supports doctors who are interested in long-term regional practice and who wish to complete their physician training in a regional setting.

The Intern and HMO programs at AWH are accredited by both PMCV and HETI. AWH has a range of training pathway for the pre-vocational doctor and offers accredited training pathways across. AWH supports the prevocational doctor from internship to being a Specialist via the multiple training pathway available.    


2027 Intern Application Process

AWH is located on the Victorian / NSW border and as such there are two potential application pathways:

 

1. Victorian Match through Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV)

Applications open 10:00 am on Tuesday 5 May 2026 and close 5:00 pm on Thursday 4 June 2026.

  • AWH will be participating in the Victorian Rural Preferential Allocation (VRPA) through PMCV match, which is ideal for those interested in working in regional areas.

  • If you are not applying via the VRPA match, then you will need to apply through the PMCV Victorian Intern allocation (VIA) process.

  • For those applying via the VRPA and PMCV CAT 4 applications, we require you to send a cover letter. 

  • Applicants are required to submit an online application via the PMCV website and to send a cover letter directly to the Intern HMO Unit.


2. RPR Intern Match through NSW Health Education and Training (HETI).

Applications for Rural Preferential Recruitment (RPR) open on Tuesday 5 May 2026 and close at 11.59pm on Thursday 4 June 2026 .

  • In addition to the HETI Application, we require a cover letter to the health service which can be uploaded to the HETI portal. 


Interviews Candidates will be short-listed and interviewed as per either the PMCV or HETI process.

Medical Students

AWH has medical students from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Charles Sturt University.

As partners with these 2 clinical schools, AWH continues to facilitate regional medical training to ensure a continued and growing Albury Wodonga highly skilled medical workforce. The region is also supported by the Border Regional Training Hub.

We will facilitate and accommodate electives and PRINT terms for medical students from other universities. If you are interested, please contact medicalstudent@awh.org.au
