Albury Wodonga's Single Site Hospital

A New Single-Site Hospital for the Albury Wodonga Community

The redevelopment of the Albury Campus will provide the region with safe, welcoming and contemporary new regional hospital facilities.

The redevelopment will consolidate 24/7 acute services onto the Albury Hospital campus, enabling us to deliver a new hospital sooner, and reducing the need for patients to travel between the two campuses.

The project includes:

  • Maternity, neonatal care and paediatric services
  • More medical and surgical beds
  • New operating theatres catering for more surgery
  • A new adult acute mental health unit
  • Expansion of outpatient and specialist spaces
  • A new helipad with access to the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department
  • More car parking.

The major investment will help the hospital become a regional health hub with the ability to attract and train skilled and specialised medical, nursing, allied health and support staff.

The project is currently in the master planning stage, and there will be considerable planning and design undertaken before construction starts; construction is expected to commence in 2024.

Future planning will consider how to adapt existing facilities to contribute to the health and wellbeing of the growing Border community, including facilities at the Wodonga Campus.

The Story So Far

In 2020-21, AWH developed a Clinical Services Plan to scope the projected healthcare needs of Albury Wodonga and the wider region over the coming decades.

This information was used to determine what infrastructure will be needed to support healthcare delivery in the future.

Consultation sessions and user group workshops were held between July and October 2021 to support early planning. This included reviewing options for development on the existing Albury Campus or looking for a new site.

Early planning confirmed that a single-site hospital, to the size and scale needed to meet our forecast health needs, could be constructed on the existing Albury Campus, but could not be constructed on the Wodonga Campus due to site restrictions.

In October 2022, the NSW and Victorian Governments announced a $558 million redevelopment of the Albury Hospital on the existing site, bringing all services together to provide the best care for the community. Redeveloping on the existing Albury site will allow us to get underway sooner, is more sustainable and delivers better value for money.

New emergency department and short stay unit

The NSW and Victorian governments are working together to build a new emergency department and short stay unit at the Albury Base campus. The new emergency department will include 42 treatment spaces, doubling its current capacity. Once the new emergency department is complete in late 2023, the existing space will be refurbished to become a new 16-bed short stay unit.

What will the new $558 million project include?

The project includes:

  • A new helipad with access to the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department
  • Maternity, neonatal care and paediatric services
  • More medical and surgical beds
  • New operating theatres catering for more surgery
  • A new 32-bed mental health unit to replace the Nolan House Mental Health Unit
  • More car parking
  • Expansion of outpatient and specialist spaces for treatments such as dialysis.

The Benefits of a Single Site Hospital

Currently, hospital services in Albury Wodonga are split across two campuses. Some services, such as anaesthetics, are duplicated at both sites, while others require patients to travel back and forth between campuses to get the care they need.

There are significant benefits to moving from two hospital sites located in two states, to a single site within a new health precinct offering multidisciplinary services.

The major investment will help the hospital become a regional health hub with the ability to attract and train skilled and specialised medical, nursing, allied health and support staff.

Co-location of inpatient services on one site will also support improved quality of care and safety. For example, it would ensure birthing rooms, operating theatres, intensive care and neonatal care are provided from the one location. Currently, maternity and paediatrics are based in separate hospitals.

Increased efficiencies will also deliver cost savings, meaning more funding can be directed towards treating more people who are sick or injured. The scale of a larger hospital on a single site will ensure AWH is a regional hospital of national significance, able to attract the best staff and position itself as a leader in education, training, and research.

Our continued future planning will consider how to adapt existing facilities to contribute to the health and wellbeing of the growing Border community, and which services should be delivered from the Wodonga campus.

The project will be delivered by Health Infrastructure in partnership with Albury Wodonga Health and the Victorian Health Building Authority.

Our commitment to the Albury Wodonga Community

We rely on feedback from our communities to design health facilities to meet your local needs. As planning progresses, we will reach out to you about how you can get involved and help create a safe and welcoming facility for all patients, carers, visitors and staff.

Your feedback is important to us and will be incorporated into our planning. We also commit to reporting back to the community at every stage to explain how your comments influenced the final design.

How To Build A Hospital

Planning and building any health facility takes time and careful consideration, and consultation is a big part of the process.

Project partners Health Infrastructure and the Victorian Health Building Authority will work together with Albury Wodonga Health, staff, patients, carers and community to create health facilities which best meet the needs of the people who will use them.

There will also be project user groups for staff and consumer representatives, drop-in sessions, regular newsletters, workshops and ample opportunities to have a say.

As the project progresses, working groups and programs such as arts in health ensure the facility reflects local culture and heritage.

Detailed information will be available on our website and around the existing health facilities to ensure you are always up to date about any changes that might affect you. When we get to the construction stage, it will be carefully managed to ensure there is no disruption to services.
