Trained sonographers carry out ultrasound examinations. Ultrasounds do not use radiation, instead they use high frequency sound waves. When having an ultrasound examination you will be required to lay on an examination table. An ultrasound gel that allows the sound waves to pass into your body is used in conjunction with an ultrasound transducer which is manipulated over the patient's body to examine the organs of interest.
