Mammography

Mammography

This involves an examination of the breast on a specialised x-ray machine. Usually 2-3 images are taken of each breast. The breast is momentarily compressed whilst the radiograph is taken. This compression is applied using a specially designed paddle. Compression is used to improve the diagnostic quality of the image and to keep the breast still during the radiograph. While the breast is compressed it may be uncomfortable for the patient but it is necessary for the examination. Mammography is often used in conjunction with a breast ultrasound to correlate findings.

Preparation: No powders or deodorant to be used on the day of the examination. Wear a two-piece outfit because it is necessary to take clothing from the waist up off. It is important to bring any previous mammograms you may have had done in the past for comparison.
Length of examination: 30 mins.
