What is a CTG?

A cardiotocograph (CTG) is a monitor that checks the baby's heart rate in utero. This provides an indication of the baby's wellbeing.

A CTG is a simple procedure, which provides a trace of your baby's heart rate. It will also detect any contractions you may be having. Your baby's heart rate and activity is a good indicator of how well your unborn baby is.

Several parameters are looked at to determine this. A midwife can perform a CTG and interpret it. Your doctor may order one for many reasons. A common reason is when you are overdue. Your doctor will discuss the reason you are having a CTG with you.

Sometimes a CTG may also be performed when you are in labour.
